Night Visions at Adelaide Botanic Garden | Review

Experience a mystical, magical winter’s night at the Adelaide Botanic Garden with Night Visions during Illuminate Adelaide 2025.

We were blown away by this year’s spellbinding light spectacular in the Adelaide Botanic Garden on opening night. Our first look at Night Visions Illuminate Adelaide was a magical experience that families will love.

It’s like stepping into another dimension – at times ethereal with drifting smoke and glowing hues creating an eerie and enchanting world within the Garden. At other times, pulsing music, flashing lasers and vibrant colour create a sense of walking through a surreal, dystopian landscape.

It’s breathtaking and beautiful!

Some of the most spectacular illusions are the giant faces with eyes that blink and mouths that move. At times, their eyes are piercingly confronting, appearing to direct their gaze into your own. Once you start to move past them, you’ll notice that the faces are actually projected onto the trees and the result is amazing!

Taking Young Children:

  • Night Visions is suitable for all ages. Children 4 years and under are free of charge but need to register for a ticket at the time of purchase.
  • Keep young kids close by and in a stroller if they are runners so you don’t lose them in the dark (there are also areas near water).
  • The gigantic faces in the trees may be a little scary for little ones (their eyes move and blink!).
  • The route through Adelaide Botanic Garden is dark, but easy to navigate and there are volunteers located along the way to help with directions or assistance.
  • There are paved and bitumen paths as well as a gravel area so the route is suitable for prams.  There is a small section of the path that may not be easily accessible by wheelchair but it can be easily bypassed.
  • There are helpers along the way to guide you and the path is signposted and roped off in areas to direct you along through the garden.

We found parts of this spectacular light trail quite peaceful and at other times, very eerie. It certainly provoked the imagination – walking through Murdoch Avenue, with it’s towering fig trees, felt like stepping into the Twilight Zone!

This is not an experience to rush – the Bicentennial Conservatory is particularly worth lingering in. With flashing lasers darting in and around the rainforest plants, rainbow beams bursting forth from the heights of the conservatory and beams of light piercing through the slats of the platform, it’s hard to know where to look first. We recommend taking your time and soaking it all in!

Food & Drink Options:

  • You can order something to eat and drink at the Evergreen Bar located at the Schomburgk Pavilion in Adelaide Botanic Garden.  There are sweet and savoury options – including hot donuts!  See menu below.
  • Drop into Illuminate Adelaide’s Base Camp at Lot Fourteen next door before or after the event and enjoy some food and drinks by the outdoor fires.

Things to Consider:

  • Only arrive at the Main Gate off North Terrace at your allocated session time for admission (early or late admissions will not be possible).
  • Allow 60 minutes to enjoy the full Night Visions experience. The walk is approx. 2km in total.
  • Night Visions will go ahead rain or shine. Rain coats with hoods will be more suitable than umbrellas as you need to be able to look up.
  • Toilets are located near the Evergreen Bar located at the Schomburgk Pavillion.
  • Parking is available in the city UPark carparks and there is street parking along Plane Tree Drive, East Terrace, and Rundle Road.
  • Public transport is a great option with a tram stop and bus stop near the Main Gate entrance.

Night Visions 2025 is very different to the illumination installations from previous years.  Photos really don’t do it justice as you need to see this event in real life to take in the sights and sounds.

Some Quick Tips:

  • Rug up! Wear thermals, put on extra layers as you don’t want to be too cold to enjoy the night.
  • Wear comfortable flat shoes as you’ll be walking all over the Adelaide Botanic Garden – around 2km.
  • It’s very dark and smoky so tread carefully, and walk slowly.
  • Remember to turn around and look back at the installations to see them from a different viewpoint.
  • Take your time to see each section in its entirety so you don’t miss anything.
  • This event includes smoke, haze, surround sound and strobing and flashing lights.  The lights are very bright at times and the music quite loud in some parts.

Location:

Entry is via the Main Gate off North Terrace only.

Check out the Digital Map before you arrive to get an idea of where everything is.  The Adelaide Botanic Garden looks so different at night compared to visiting during the day!
