Olive Branch Cafe | Balhannah | Review

olivebranch-3

The Olive Branch cafe in Balhannah is a favourite amongst hills-folk and well worth the half an hour drive up the freeway for city-dwellers.

It is family-friendly without compromising on the ‘grown-up’ niceties that we all enjoyed of pre-kid coffee catchups. The cafe itself is open and light, with plenty of room to navigate prams, kids, carriers and highchairs without bumping and crashing your way through other diners.

With a small, enclosed play area in the corner, young kids will be happily amused with plenty of toys suitable for little ones. For older children there is a comfy couch with books to welcome them.

Plenty of Ikea high chairs are available, meaning there will be little likelihood of you having to stalk anyone who is nearly finished with theirs.

The menu caters for all dietary requirements with a wonderful emphasis on ‘real food’ and local produce. There are plenty of delicious, healthy options for both adults and kids; even stock-standard kids menu items, such as chicken-nuggets, are homemade from 100% chicken breast.

The coffees are reasonably priced ($3.20 for a cup, $4.20 for a mug, as of July 2015) but do yourself a favour and head straight for the Hot Chocolate made with real chocolate pieces (white, milk or dark) from Melba’s Chocolate factory and local, hills milk from Tweedvale.

Olive Branch Cafe

The Olive Branch Cafe is fully-licensed and the atmosphere is relaxed enough to be able to enjoy a glass of local wine even with the kids running around.

They hold a number of events throughout the year and often have special activities on for children including cooking classes, magic shows, craft activities and live music. They also host and cater for kids birthday parties and functions. It’s worth keeping an eye on their Facebook page to find out what they’ve got coming up.

The Olive Branch cafe is definitely worth visiting when you want to bring the kids along but still hope for the chance of some adult-conversation and would be perfect for child-friendly meetings, Mother’s Group catchups or a special meal out with the family.
