OZ: The Cirque Experience | Review

Musical Theatre with a Wizard of OZ theme!
Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
Last night our family rugged up to visit the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for the opening show of OZ: The Circus Experience. Making our way inside under the big neon lights, there was anticipation in the air with lots of families making their way inside. On arrival my youngest daughter spotted the photo wall and ran up to it with excitement. We had just enough time for a few happy snaps before we were ushered inside to take a seat and enjoy the show.
We are big Wizard of Oz fans and were delighted to see our favourite characters standing in front of us singing, dancing and talking to the crowd. It wasn’t long before we realised that this show is a quirky remake of the original tale and it was narrated throughout by the Wizard of Oz himself.
The show follows Dorothy on her journey to OZ where she accidentally crushes and kills The Wicked Witch of the East. In OZ she has various encounters meeting the munchkins, Glinda the Good Witch and her dear friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion who together go on a quest to meet the all powerful Oz to ask for his help.
Although the show follows a similar flow the storyline and characters are given a modern flare. For example, the munchkins are portrayed as cheerleaders and Glinda the good witch has an i-phone with selfie stick that she uses throughout the show. There is a happy ending with each character ultimately finding what they were seeking and Dorothy returning home. Just like the original this take reminds us there there is no place like home and often the qualities that we seek externally are within us all along.
The performance is a light hearted mix of theatre, music and circus in appealing to young and old alike. We visited with a five and seven-year-old and both particularly enjoyed the hula hoop tricks and acrobatics performed with the silks. Dorothy did an amazing job playing her part and was a fantastic singer and entertainer. We loved the scarecrow who was incredibly strong, captivating and performed some amazing gravity-defying tricks.
If you are thinking of watching this show, we would recommend it for ages eight and above. Some of the jokes went over my daughters’ heads. It may also be a bit of a late show for littlies.
All in all, we had a fun night visiting the Entertainment Centre and seeing a familiar tale performed right in front of our eyes. We loved the circus aspects, the acrobatics and it is always enjoyable to watch an uplifting story with positive messaging for young viewers.

What we like about it
- The circus and acrobatic elements and the Wizard of Oz elements
Things to Consider:
- In our opinion the show is best for ages 8 and above
- The show starts at 7:30pm so it can be a little late for young viewers
Location:
98 Port Rd, Hindmarsh SA 5007
