Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre | Felixstow | Review

The Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre in Felixstow features new indoor and outdoor pools, outdoor waterslides and a water play splash park.

The newly redeveloped Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre has reopened, transforming the much-loved community pool into an impressive aquatic centre with indoor and outdoor swimming, waterslides, water play and plenty of family-friendly facilities.

We visited for the grand opening celebrations during the October school holidays and were impressed by just how much there is for families. What was once a traditional suburban swimming pool has been completely reimagined as a modern aquatic and recreation destination, while still retaining the outdoor swimming experience generations of Adelaide families have enjoyed here.

And, importantly according to our junior reviewer, the new waterslides are “just the right speed!”

Waterslides & Water Play

The new 14-metre-high waterslide tower is hard to miss and features two waterslides that wind their way back down to ground level. They were a natural highlight of our visit and a fun addition for older kids looking for a little more action at the pool.

For younger children, there’s a zero-depth splash and water play area, so they can cool off and play without needing to venture into the swimming pools.

Together, the slides and splash area make Payneham much more than somewhere to come for swimming laps – it’s now a great option for a family day at the pool.

Indoor & Outdoor Swimming Pools

One of the best things about the redevelopment is the choice of both indoor and outdoor swimming.

Outside, you’ll find an impressive 10-lane, 50-metre Olympic-sized pool, with plenty of space to swim and enjoy the warmer weather.

There is also an eight-lane indoor lap pool, and we loved how warm it was during our visit. The indoor option also makes the centre much more versatile for swimming year-round.

Family Facilities

There are some really practical features that make visiting the Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre with children easier too.

The change rooms are spacious and accessible, and we particularly appreciated the free lockers to keep belongings secure while everyone was in the water.

Around the centre you’ll find landscaped recreation areas and shaded picnic tables, giving families somewhere to take a break between swims. There’s also an on-site café, which is always handy when you’re planning to stay for a while.

Each pool has an all-access entry via ramp or lift. Aquatic wheelchairs will be available for public use.

What we love about it:

• For us, the combination of warm indoor swimming, a huge outdoor pool, waterslides and dedicated children’s water play makes the new Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre a fantastic addition for Adelaide families.
• The practical details have been well thought out too. Spacious change rooms, free lockers, accessible facilities, shade, picnic tables, and places to grab food or a drink make it easier to settle in and spend a few hours here.
• After four years without the local pool, Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre has returned as a much bigger and more versatile aquatic centre – and we think the waterslides and splash play will be a particular hit with kids this summer.
