A lot has changed at this city oasis since our last review, but it’s still an amazing garden cafe with fresh, delicious food and drink options and a perfect escape for breakfast or brunch for kids and adults alike.
Review by Claire Davill
Located in the city’s west end, along the quiet, friendlier part of Hindley Street, this cafe really is an oasis in the middle of the city. The seating fills a rambling, lush garden that really does feel like you’re in an English cottage garden where you would expect to see Peter Rabbit and friends. Kids will enjoy spotting all the rabbit statues around the garden.
Large wooden tables are surrounded by fences with rambling passionfruit vines, planter boxes and garden implements. There is also an indoor seating area too, but the real atmosphere is outside.
The staff are friendly, the service is super fast, and the cafe caters well to children. There are high chairs available, a separate kids menu, the outdoor area is fenced except for the entry gate, and the toilet facilities are large and clean with a changing table provided.
The menu changes often and features fresh and often locally grown ingredients. The serves are large and beautifully presented. We can recommend Peter’s Pancakes for an absolutely ‘instagramable’ (and delicious) dish, as well as their standard breakfast offerings of eggs and toast.
The coffee is fantastic and the usual options are available, including iced options. The large number of people ordering takeaway coffee while we dined is a testament to how good the coffee is. The cafe also offers a wide selection of teas, smoothies, juices and cocktails.
Most items on the extensive menu are suitable for children, but there is a separate children’s menu as well. It’s simple and only has a few options, but this is a good thing – much better for indecisive kids! The ricotta pancake with honey and butter was a hit, as was the babycino, which came with a generous serve of sprinkles. It’s also easy to order sides to add to a dish, such as smoked bacon, avocado and grilled halloumi.
The cafe is very popular and gets busy quite quickly. However, the garden setting makes it feel relaxed and quiet, even when all the tables are full. It’s perfectly designed for a lazy breakfast, brunch or lunch.
Make sure you check out the vertical garden along the outside of the cafe, and the actual tree growing inside the cafe and adjacent mural (near the toilets).
Opening Hours
The cafe is open from 7:30am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, and closes at 3pm each day.
Because it is a very popular cafe, we highly recommend booking ahead, especially on weekends. There is plenty of metered street parking nearby, which is free on Sundays.
