Pick Your Own Strawberries at Harvest the Fleurieu l Review

Pick Your Own Strawberries at Harvest the Fleurieu in Mt Compass.

Review by Jo Parkinson

There’s nothing quite like the delicious taste and sweet smell of freshly picked strawberries. And there’s no better way to experience this, than by spending a day at Harvest the Fleurieu strawberry farm in Mt Compass.

Located in Mount Compass, Harvest the Fleurieu is easily accessible from Victor Harbor Road where you can’t miss the huge shed and signs to the farm. There is plenty of room to park your car out the front.

Strawberry Picking

We made our ‘Pick your Own’ booking online prior to our visit, which made everything super quick and easy when we arrived. There are 3 sessions to choose from and kids aged 12 and under are free of charge. You can also pre-purchase an empty punnet ready to fill with strawberries. On arrival you pick this up from the front counter and the friendly staff will explain the guidelines of picking and answer any questions you may have.

Then you are free to head to the fields and pick away! The kids loved that they were allowed to pick and taste the strawberries as they filled the punnet, and as there are no time limits as to how long you spend in the field, there is no need to rush. Each generously sized punnet holds approximately 1kg of strawberries when full. The day we went was quite busy, however there were still plenty of strawberries to choose from.

There is even a tractor for kids to pose and play on once you’ve filled your punnets.

Cafe and Market Hall

Once your punnet is full, you can head back into the shed where you will find a café and market hall, full of delicious local produce. The café offers a range of bakery style food, as well as yummy ice-cream, cakes, tea, coffee, and milkshakes. There are also plenty of gluten free options available. We couldn’t go past the strawberry sorbet and strawberry milkshakes; they were a hit with the kids! There are tables inside and out for you to sit and enjoy the beautiful surrounds of the farm.

The market hall sells a fantastic variety of products, such as seasonal fresh fruit and veg, giftware, chocolates, beauty products and chilled items like cheese, yoghurt, and meat.

Strawberry picking at Harvest the Fleurieu is a great way to spend a day with family or friends, and the kids can enjoy fresh strawberries in their lunchbox for the next week!

Things to consider:

  • Booking ahead made getting started quick and easy
  • We found that a few of the rows did get a little muddy, so wearing enclosed shoes is a good idea
  • Pack a hat and sunscreen as there is no shade when picking the fruit
  • You must work your way up and down the rows, as jumping across them can damage plants.

Cost:

  • Entry to the patch – $5 per person (12 & up)
  • Children aged 5-11 years – $3 entry
  • Age 4 & below – FREE entry
  • Punnets = $12 each

Duration: 60 Minutes (approx.) Each person entering the patch must purchase an entry.

Rules for entering the patch:

  • No other bags or containers allowed in the patch
  • Please enter and exit via the ramp (do not enter restricted areas)
  • Please walk up and down the rows
  • Please don’t bring other food into the patch
  • No smoking in the patch
  • Online bookings are now available for pick your own which they highly recommend to guarantee your spot as they suspect time slots will sell out quickly.
  • There are 3 time slots throughout the day: 9.00am, 11.30am  and 2.00pm.
