Pirate Life Brewing | Port Adelaide | Review

Pirate Life Brewery’s headquarters in Port Adelaide is a great family-friendly destination for lunch, dinner, or a snack. There’s ample space both inside and outside, a dedicated kid’s menu, and a play area to keep the kids occupied. The whole area is very welcoming – for adults, kids, and even dogs!

Review by Claire Davill

Pirate Life Brewery’s kitchen is open from 11am to 8pm, 7 days a week, and the food is fresh, tasty, and arrives super quickly – perfect for when you’re dining with hungry kids. Book a table inside, or pick a table outside near the play area (these tables are first-come, first-served).  All tables outside are shaded by umbrellas and the greenery around the outside area ensures that it’s not too hot, even on hot days.

The kid’s menu features the usual crowd pleasers – fish and chips, chicken nuggets and chips, beef sliders, and a kid-friendly grazing plate. Soft drinks and a wide variety of juices are available for drinks, and Gelista ice creams served in their own tub are available for dessert. We tried the chicken nuggets and chips and they were perfectly cooked, with a generous serve of tomato sauce on the side.

For the adults, there’s a big variety of snacks, meals, and sides. Many of the plates are designed to be shared, so it’s easy to select a few different things to try. We had the grilled squid with yuzu kosho and lemon, souvlaki lamb skewers with chimichurri, and a panzanella salad. All dishes came out super fast, were very tasty and the flavours were fresh and light. All the staff here are friendly and attentive, and happy to answer any questions about the menu.

For dessert we had tiramisu, the giant cookie with ice cream and a chocolate ice cream from the kid’s menu. The serves were generous – the cookie really is giant sized!

There are 24 beers on tap for the adults, as well as a selection of wines, spirits and non-alcoholic flavoured sparkling water.

The outside play area includes a beautiful painted hopscotch, giant noughts and crosses, a checkers board, giant jenga, and a small rope climbing cradle and play boat. Kids are also provided with their own cups with chalk so they can decorate the large expanses of cement in the outside area.

Inside, the huge, open warehouse setting means it never feels too crowded. As well as plenty of seating, you can see the working brewery behind the bar. There’s also a small area with arcade games to play (a token machine is present – most games are the equivalent of $1-2 to play). You can also try your hand at shuffle board. There’s a brightly painted piano near the door that kids love to play a tune on!

During school holidays, the venue often has specials on kid’s meals as well as occasional kid’s entertainment. There was free face painting when we visited, very popular with all the kids present. There was also live music adding to the vibe, which was not too loud and provided a lovely relaxed backdrop on a summer afternoon.

There are high chairs available for babies and young children, dog bowls for furry friends, and even a bike rack for those who arrive by bike. There’s plenty of street parking near the entrance, and the nearby streets are quiet.
