Pixel Paint | The Light Room Adelaide | Review
The Light Room’s Pixel Paint is a virtual creative experience inspired by still life art.
The Light Room at ILA on Light Square has a new immersive experience, inspired by an exhibition of works by Robert Hannaford AM and Alison Mitchell Hannaford. Using digital brushes, you can paint on (or off) the large canvases, letting your imagination run wild.
Review by Claire Davill
After walking through the exhibition featuring many still life paintings, it’s time to create your own. The digital brush is like a remote control. You can choose your colour, point your brush at the canvas and start creating. If you attended Neon Canvas in January, the concept is the same – using technology developed by the University of Adelaide and Realities Extended, but refined and improved. A big change is that your brush size changes depending how close to the canvas you are. Step back for broad strokes and close up for fine detail.
The digital brushes are easy to use, even for little kids. One button to change the paint colour, and one button to paint. The rectangular “canvas” shapes are there to frame your art, and if you start painting within the canvas, your painting won’t go outside the lines. If you start outside the canvas, anything is possible! A perfect opportunity to “think outside the box”.
There are still life props in the middle of the room for inspiration. Every 15 minutes, the canvases are washed clean and you can start anew.
Don’t forget to check out the art exhibition, which includes a video about the artist’s studio in Riverton, and the screen in the cafe area showing time lapse footage of fungi growing – it’s mesmerising.
