Preparing for the Ignite Program and Scholarship Exams

Even students who are naturally talented or gifted can benefit from specialised tuition when preparing to sit an ACER scholarship exam, or seeking entry to an IGNITE program at an Adelaide secondary school.

Entry to these programs is extremely competitive, and so students need to be highly motivated to be successful, as well as having experience and confidence in tackling the demanding material contained in the entry tests.

REM+ Tuition has an outstanding record in preparing students for scholarship examinations. Their small classes led by expert tutors mean that students are extremely well prepared for the rigours of sitting the exam, gaining confidence and unlocking their potential in the process.

The weekly classes run for 1.5 hours, during which time students will receive personalised, small group tuition in maths, English and critical thinking skills based specifically around the requirements of the ACER and Ignite examinations.

How are students prepared for scholarship exams?

The scholarship program at REM+ Tuition is designed to prepare students for:

  • The Australian Council of Education Research (ACER) Scholarship Examination, which many Adelaide independent schools use to award scholarships; and
  • The Ignite Examination used by public secondary schools in Adelaide to determine entry into their Gifted and Talented programs.

A wide-ranging, comprehensive approach means that students develop and enhance the variety of skills necessary for them to be able to achieve their full potential in the examination. This is achieved through stretching their minds, developing the ability to think laterally, and refining their problem-solving skills.

The areas the tutors focus on over the course of the program include:

  • Reading comprehension skills such as text interpretation, making inferences, prediction and evaluation;
  • Maths skills, such as identifying patterns in number sequences, measurement, problem-solving skills and spatial reasoning;
  • Analytical reasoning skills, verbal reasoning skills, and literal/alphabetical reasoning; and
  • Genre writing, focussing on how to write a high quality text in the limited time allowed.

Using a variety of challenging activities and tasks (including practice tests and past papers), students are taught appropriate and helpful techniques for answering multiple choice questions, as well as time management strategies that enable them to make the best use of their time. They will also learn how to explain and verbalise their approach to problem solving, and that there may be a range of ways to find solutions.

In addition to tasks, exercises and assignments undertaken during class time, students will also be set homework, and it is expected that all of these tasks are completed regularly and diligently.

Experience shows that the longer pupils have to prepare for these important examinations, the greater their chances of success. This is why REM+ Tuition encourages enrolment in their specialist program well in advance of the exams, in order to give students the best possible opportunity to be as thoroughly prepared as they can.
