Re:PLAY at Adelaide Festival Centre Review

Spark your creativity and channel your inner artist at Re:PLAY. Held in Adelaide Festival Centre at Artspace, families can join in on kid friendly workshops lead by prominent South Australian artists transforming everyday items into pieces of art.

Stepping foot inside Artspace for the Re:PLAY workshop everything felt light, bright, airy and fun. The room was filled with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows that invite you in and the white walls at the back of the room were adorned with happy and colourful art. Inside the space was set up with art tables on each side, mats, pillows on the floor and two little tents for quiet time.

The workshop started with everyone gathering in the middle of the room to meet the lovely artists, Ellen and Gemma, and to go through the two experiences on offer. We then made our way to the left-hand side, and Ellen took us through the activity. We spent the first half of the session with Gemma making colourful wall hangings using old cereal boxes and as many coloured papers, paints and shapes as our hearts desired.

After putting the finishing touches on our pieces, we donned art smocks and got stuck into some creative brush making with Gemma. The premise of this workshop was to use various objects to create different paint patterns on paper. This was incredibly fun for the kids, and they ended up constructing wand-like brushes using straw, foam, cardboard and tubes. After making their tools, they then took their instruments to paint and had a ball of a time experimenting with colour, shapes and patterns. We ended up leaving with not just the wall hanging but also a small artistic frog pond constructed from recycled foam and other materials.

The experience ran for two hours, and honestly, the time flew by. Not only was it a fun experience for young and old, but it was also a calming one. We happened to attend a sensory sensitive session, which meant it was smaller in size and designed to support children with sensory sensitivities.

So if you are in search of a school holiday activity that will not only keep the kids entertained but will change the way they think about everyday items, make sure you grab a ticket to Re:PLAY while you can!

What we like about

  • The interactive and sustainable aspects in a great space led by expert artists. Overall, we loved everything about this workshop. It was also very cost-effective which is a big plus for families with multiple kids

Things to consider

  • We parked at Festival Theatre carpark, which, due to the renovations, can be quite limited. We recommend arriving in the city early to secure a good parking spot or prepay for parking.

Coffee and food options nearby

  • We had a nice coffee, and the kids had juice downstairs at the Playhouse cafe

Location:

Festival Dr, Adelaide SA 5000
