START at the Gallery and START Art Club are presented free thanks to the Balnaves Foundation
START at the Gallery offers an exciting introduction to visual art for children and families. Held on the first Sunday of every month, START is free and includes art activities, tours, live performance and entertainment.
START is recommended for children aged 5–10 years and parent / carer supervision is required. No bookings are necessary.

11am – 3pm
Begin a new story in 2016 with START at the Gallery. Take a tour of Warwick Thornton’s moving image work and find out about the Jedi of the bush before making your own Jedi master, favourite footballer or fan in the Bush Footy Studio. Let your imagination run free with storytelling inside Kudlyo the Giant Black Swan and see a performance by the Taikurtinna Dance Group.

Children’s Tours

Step inside Kudlyo the Giant Black Swan to hear traditional Aboriginal storytelling.

Aboriginal artist and musician Allan Sumner plays a mix of instrumental and DJ sets.

1pm – Taikurtinna Dance Performance
Taikurtinna Dance group perform dances expressing stories handed down from elders. Taikurtinna means family in the Kaurna language.

MAKING MEMORIES
Make memories with us at START. will be Making Memories with Photography as theis our focus this month with activities inspired by the display Public Image, Private Lives: Family, Friends and Self in Photography. Explore the connections between the photographers and their subjects and create a mixed media portrait resembling a daguerrotype.use. Let your imagination run free in a storytelling workshop . Create a mixed media portrait resembling a daguerrotype and have a photo with your friends and family in the photo booth to remember the day.

MAGIC AND MYSTERY
At this magical and mysterious START, sing along with Horace the Wizard that Wasn’t , as he shares some amazing insights into the mysterious world of wizardry. Find out about the extraordinary necklace of raindrops in the storytelling performances and take a tour of Magic Object to inspire your own creation of a magical wearable object.

TRICKERY AND FANTASY
Trickery and Fantasy will set the scene for START in April. Don’t be a fool, come and see special theatrical performances of Much Ado About Nothing and find out more about magic in the performance of Joan Aitken’s tale, The Elves in the Shelves. Become a master of illusion as you make your own kinetic work of art.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
Explore the wonder that is the Wunderkammer this START day as you create your own Cabinet of Curiosities while journeying through , take a journey through Magic Object with The Dream Collector. Let Mindblown magician Mickster the Trickster show you a trick or two, then watch a storytelling performance about a girl who learns to skip in her sleep.
