When to see the next Super Blue Moon.
A rare super blue moon that only appears once per decade will be visible from Australia on Wednesday 30 August 2023.
What makes the super blue moon rare, is that it actually refers to two different moon phases happening at the same time; a supermoon and a blue moon. A supermoon refers to a full moon that occurs when the moon is near its closest point to earth. This happens about 3 to 4 times per year. During this, the moon can appear 6-7% larger than an average full moon.
A blue moon is a full moon that occurs after another full moon in the same calendar month. The moon does not actually turn blue during this time. Blue moons happen approximately every 2-3 years.
When to see it?
The super blue moon will technically occur on Thursday 31 August 2023 at 11.05am (SA time), but this will not be the best time for viewing.
The best time to see it will be Wednesday evening, 30 August 2023, at around sunset, just before 6pm.
The super blue moon is also expected to be visible at the same time on Thursday evening (clouds permitting).
The next blue moon is due to occur in May 2026, while the next super blue moon will be in 2029.
