Tetris – DreamBIG Children’s Festival | Review

Watching Tetris to start with was a bit like walking into someone else’s conversation mid-way through, then all of a sudden just ‘getting it’. Based on the computer game, Tetris, the show starts out with Arch 8’s quartet interacting without speech, interlocking their bodies into very awkward looking shapes in this simple space with no props, lighting, or costumes. It sounds bland, but is anything but. Stay with it and you will be well-rewarded, because these performers believe in every move they make and the choreography is mesmerising.

This is a mix of contemporary dance, acrobatics, and movement without a traditional storyline. Together and apart, the performers form physical balls, they move one another’s limbs, climb on one another and play together. One minute they form a bundle, the next they are playing ninjas and then competing with rubix cubes (the only props used!).

Watching the quartet move and interact with each other is like watching kids at play – it brings the same kind of joy! The audience was definitely engaged and appreciated the humour of these four very likeable performers.

The playful performers had a lovely way of engaging children and adults alike. It started when one of the performers was being “controlled” by the rubix cube. She shared the rubix cube with a small child who took great delight in twisting it vigorously, causing the performer to shake, jiggle and fall over, which was highly amusing! All four performers then moved through the audience allowing members to “take control” of them with the rubix cubes, just as though they were playing a game of tetris!

Before long, all the members of the audience were invited on stage to become part of the game, creating arches, congo lines and doing silly movements. Everyone looked as though they were having a ball, particularly the kids!

Just goes to show – you don’t need a computer game to have fun. Just grab a few friends and start moving, climbing, dancing, pretending and imagining.

This is a fantastic performance for all ages: simple, honest, engaging, funny and clever.
