Review by Brooke Hendry
We recently attended this theatrical, alternate reality event (the adults only version) of The Alice – An Immersive Cocktail Experience, and it was an amusing and entertaining experience. If you love a good laugh, fancy yourself pretty good at riddle solving (note: it’s okay if you can’t solve riddles, it just adds to the fun, and might take you a bit longer to get to your first cocktail!) and you’re looking for something different to do, then you will love this event.
It’s a fun, and sometimes a little confusing, trip down the rabbit hole…
The venue isnโt signed out the front, but itโs above Karenโs Diner on East Terrace in Adelaide. Wait out the front until the Mad Hatter opens the door. Youโll then begin your topsy-turvy 90 minute journey into the magical realm of Wonderland!
The venue is quite small and cosy, and fantastically decked out. You definitely feel as though youโve stepped into a magical adventure land โ where you just donโt know whatโs going to happen next. And the hosts kept us laughing, guessing, interacting, and on our toes the entire way through.
As we entered, we were greeted by the White Rabbit who provided us with a welcome jello shot (it sure has been a while since I had one of those!).
It’s interactive, with riddles to solve… and you’ll have a hoot of a time!
Throughout the event we were treated with a fun performance from the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Queen of Hearts.
We had to explore the rooms, and talk to the different characters to solve riddles to find clues to help us to find different potions. Once your group has found all of your potions you get to use them to make up your first magical cocktail. It was quite strong (not complaining!) and mighty tasty.
We also played other games during the session, such as trying to figure out who out of the guests there had stolen the Queen of Heartโs tarts, and a little game with the second Wonderland cocktail of the night.
The performances were fantastic – the cast stayed in character and were very entertaining, and I loved the interactive use of the guests and trying to solve the riddles. There were times where we were all a little confused at what we were meant to be doingโฆ but that did add to the craziness that is the Mad Hatters Tea Party!
Most of the sessions are for strictly 18+ only, but hey have put on some family-friendly sessions so the kids don’t have to miss out on the magic. But, if you can get a baby sitter and you’re looking for an interesting and entertaining time out with friends, or you’re looking for something a little different for a date night, then give this a go! It’s a great experience, full of laughs and adventure.
What we liked:
I loved going in not really knowing what to expect from the evening, and I didn’t expect to laugh as much as I did. The characters were all great and made it a fun time, keeping us all engaged. Some of the riddles were a little hard, but we all got there in the end, and it’s always great to do something a little different when heading out.
Things to consider:
It’s a good idea to eat before you come. I was a little disappointed that the โEat Meโ cake mentioned, ended up being just one normal chocolate chip or anzac biscuit each. And, being a tea party, some small nibbles or other drink options or water on the table would have been nice to have before working for our first cocktail.
