The Cedars | Hahndorf | Review

Just on the outskirts of the beautiful town of Hahndorf, is The Cedars, which was the home of the prominent and prolific artist, Hans Heysen, his wife, Sallie and their eight children. Heysen had a passion for conservation, which is evident in his Australian landscapes and in The Cedars, set on 60 hectares and still owned by the Heysen family.

A visit to The Cedars is like stepping back in time. The house, built in the 1870’s and purchased by Heysen in 1912 still contains original furniture, rugs, paintings, magazines and grand old books. It is a charming and intriguing house, especially for the kids. Expect questions about the missing television and about “funny” objects and their purpose. Entry to the house is only possible as part of a guided tour.

Step outside the house to the rambling garden with it’s cottage garden flower beds, winding paths, steps and enchanting trees. I overheard a few children comment, “ I wish I lived here”. The house and garden is set on acreage and it is possible to wander through the property on allocated paths and imagine Hans Heysen sketching and painting the majestic gums. The kids might enjoy a short walk to the Shady Pool, a natural pond set amidst the huge gums and bush.

Visitors are able to visit Nora Heysen’s studio and Hans Heysen’s purpose built studio without a guide, however I found the guide very knowledgeable and informative. Even the kids were engaged and happy to ask questions. Who knew Hans Heysen not once spilled paint on the ground or himself and that he produced a staggering 20,000 artworks in his lifetime.

A visit to The Cedars is a reminder of how talented, dedicated and successful Hans Heysen was. It was a privilege to view some of Heysen’s and Nora Heysen’s works in his studio and throughout the house. I would recommend a visit of at least two hours as part of the guided tour, however, to really explore the property and garden, allow longer and bring a picnic lunch.

The property is on Heysen Rd, off Ambleside Rd, Hanhdorf. The Cedars is open daily, (except Mondays) from 10am – 4:30pm. It is also open on Public Holidays. Toilets are available for visitors.
