The Cool Mum: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️   5 stars for a ‘lit’ show. Parents of tweens, teens and beyond, this is one show you don’t want to miss!

Review by Jo Parkinson

If you still associate floss with teeth and tik-tok with clocks, prepare to be schooled on how to be cool with self-proclaimed ‘MILF’, Jo Ghastly. Her genuinely funny and endearing character is so relatable she will have you laughing from start to finish.

Parenting can be hard these days, right? Well not to worry, Jo Ghastly is mum to a 19-year-old and 22-year-old and is confident she has nailed parenting. She is performing her award-winning show ‘The Cool Mum’ at the Adelaide Fringe, to stage an ‘intervention’ and help parents of the world to understand their kids better.

This mum from New Zealand has many hilarious lessons for parents on ‘where they have gone wrong.’ Introducing herself as a motivational speaker, she tells the audience they are at one of her world-famous ‘seminars.’ Jo starts up a slide show to let us know what interesting topics she’ll be covering. From learning words on Urban Dictionary, interpreting teenage grunts and going viral on Tik-Tok, Jo has all the tips and tricks you will need when raising and understanding teenagers.

She goes into detail about what she calls being ‘social media aware, but others may call it stalking’. Jo teaches us about dance moves from Fortnite, impresses us with her beat-boxing and rapping skills and shares a couple of entertaining videos and slides.

The jokes are quick and continuous and are all about topics the modern-day world can relate to.

There is a small amount of audience participation, with two members picked to go up on stage. One is a dad who Jo transforms into the epitome of cool before our eyes. Another is a mum who in a conversation with Jo, has to impersonate her teenage son using only grunts and two other words.

As much as Jo pokes fun at raising kids and trying to stay in tune with them, she does touch on a couple of points that are good take-home lessons. The rupture and repair of relationships, or in her words “do a dab and be the scab.” Also remembering you don’t have to be a perfect parent, but good enough.

This highly entertaining and impressive one-hour comedy is sure to leave you with a smile on your face and rating highly on the cool-o-metre!
