Adelaide’s Giant Christmas Tree Lighting event 

Every Christmas, Adelaide’s Giant Christmas Tree soars 25 metres into the sky above Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga, shining as the heart of the city’s festive celebrations.

Join the City of Adelaide for the official lighting of the Giant Christmas Tree – a cherished annual tradition, and FREE community event, that marks the start of the holiday season. Gather your friends, family, and community for an unforgettable night filled with music, joy, and festive cheer.

The lighting of the Giant Christmas Tree takes place on Saturday 15 November 2025 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 

Event Highlights:

Official Tree Lighting Ceremony – 8:30 pm

Watch as the Giant Christmas Tree bursts to life in a spectacular display of lights and colour, illuminating the city skyline and sparking the magic of Christmas.

Beloved local MC Shanelle Franklin will guide the night’s celebrations, keeping the crowd entertained and the festive spirit high.

Live Music & Performances

Enjoy an incredible line-up of performances from Sun of Africa, The Baker Boys, World Music SA, and Primary Schools Festival of Music Choir.

From soulful rhythms to vibrant beats and angelic voices, this diverse program celebrates the spirit of togetherness that defines the season.

Food Trucks & Family Fun

Treat yourself to delicious food and drinks available for purchase from a range of local food trucks. Take your picnic blanket, find a spot on the lawn, and soak up the atmosphere with your loved ones.

Visit the Giant Christmas Tree

Soaring 25 metres into the sky, this beautiful Christmas tree towers over Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga each year and lights up nightly until the end of the festive season as part of the City of Adelaide’s Christmas Festival. 

Going to see the giant Christmas tree is the city is a fabulous outing with the kids and it’s also completely FREE to visit. You can take a picnic or grab some food from the Adelaide Central Market or Gouger Street and admire the lights while sitting in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga. If it’s a warm night, the kids will love having a splash in the Victoria Square fountains too! The fountains are switched on every night unless an event is scheduled in the square.

This magnificent Christmas tree is covered in more than 13,616 individually programmed twinkling LED lights and features a light display which runs for approximately 10 minutes. 

The Giant Christmas Tree lights up nightly at 8.30pm until 2.30am.

There are also some pop-up water fountains in front of the Christmas Tree, so it’s a good idea to wear bathers or take a change of clothes and towel if your kids can’t resist running through the water (which is most kids!).


 

The tree is also worth visiting during the day if you have little ones who are usually asleep by 8.00pm.
