The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | Review
If you are seeking a school holiday film with equal parts nostalgia and feel food family fun, the Super Mario Galaxy movie might be just what you are after!
Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
The movie begins in a faraway galaxy where Princess Rosalina is playing with her star children. Her kingdom is then invaded by a machine controlled by Bowser Jnr seeking to use her powers for his own benefit. After a fierce battle Rosalina is captured and brought back to Bowsers domain. Back in the Mushroom Kingdom Princess Peach finds out that her sister Rosalina has been captured and together with her friends Luigi, Mario and Yoshi go on a quest to save her.
The film ultimately is a battle between good and evil with themes of loyalty, friendship and perseverance dotted throughout. The movie carries a PG rating due to mild threats and violence. The fact that this is a cartoon makes it milder but there are quite a few battles with multiple weapons used but no blood, gore or injuries shown. There are some parts in the movie that could disturb young children especially the part when Bowser falls into the lava or a few scenes with glow in the dark eyes. We watched this movie with a five and a seven-year-old with no complaints but every child is different, so something to think about.
I also want to say that I am not a crazy super Mario fan. I have never played the video game. I have seen brief parts of the first movie but that is pretty much the extent of my Super Mario knowledge. I decided to watch this movie with my kids because they are super fans and my husband gets the warm and fuzzies thinking about this game. I walked out feeling nauseous, overstimulated but with two happy kids and a husband that was entertained throughout. Perhaps I am getting more sensitive as I age but if you are someone that suffers from motion sickness and doesn’t do well with extremely bright colours be mindful of watching this movie on the big screen.
So overall, is this movie one to watch on the big screen? That is a tough call but looking around the cinema I could see so many kids absolutely enthralled by the action unfolding in front of them and thoroughly loving it. If you are a die-hard Super Mario fan, you might find the sequel doesn’t live up to the first movie. However if you have kids that enjoy all things Super Mario and are seeking a relaxed school holiday activity, the Super Mario Galaxy movie could be exactly what you are after and a nice way to spend a few hours.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is showing in Cinemas from 2 April 2026 for a limited time.
