A truck themed event that was free, fun and extremely family friendly! The City of Tea Tree Gully delivered a fantastic Touch a Truck day that provided the perfect kick off for school holiday fun!

Pulling up to Civic Park, the grounds were alive with the sounds of laughter, squeals and truck related beeps and sirens. The event was arranged in the middle of Civic Park and involved multiple trucks, vans and vehicles alongside food trucks, community stands and kid friendly activities.

Walking in the first thing that caught the kid’s eyes was an interactive recycling activity where they had to place different items in the coloured bins. After sparking their eco awareness we made our way towards the trucks. There were little line ups beside each vehicle and a climbing and viewing platform that made it easy for the kids to jump into the vehicle and have their photo taken. We spent ages going from truck to truck and enjoying the many vehicles on display.

After doing a few laps of the oval we noticed a small section for junior tradies. This area was dedicated to kids under seven and giving them the opportunity to indulge in construction themed play driving around the vehicles whilst wearing high-vis. This activity was understandably very popular and unfortunately we were too late to give it a try. However the kids and adults surrounding the area seemed to really enjoy this offering and it looked like a fantastic interactive activity.

There were tables and chairs set up in the middle of the oval with numerous choices for food and treats. The Men’s shed had a sausage sizzle going and other options included Mod Pizzeria, Greek BBQ and a pink ice cream van. Food offerings aside, the City of Tea Tree Gully also provided a calm zone where kids could draw in a quiet place as well as a dedicated sensory hour with no horns and sirens. It was also nice to see the Australian Breastfeeding Association had a tent providing education and resources to families.

The Touch a Truck event was busy but absolutely worth a visit. The children really enjoyed the day and the fact that it was completely free, took the pressure off of parents. Overall there were a great deal of activities provided, the event was well thought out with good spacing between the vehicles and activities and a nice wholesome family friendly feel.

So the next time your local council offers a Touch a Truck event, this is your sign to put it in the calendar and make sure you attend.
