Urth Clay Studio | School Holiday Classes | Review
By Claire Davill
Urth Clay Studio’s school holiday program gives kids and teens the opportunity to get creative and get messy with fun and inspiring pottery classes.
The school holiday program gives kids the chance to try their hand at two pottery methods – hand building and the pottery wheel. Each class allows kids to try each method out for one hour, with one of their pieces professionally fired and glazed for pickup later.
Kids are given instruction and guidance, with a different piece made each lesson, but the courses remain flexible to encourage creativity.
The pottery wheels are a big highlight – the wheels here are small enough for kids to handle and after some instruction, they’re off and spinning! The process is messy and meditative, and the shelves surrounding the wheels are full of drying and glazed items that provide inspiration for what can be achieved, even with very little experience.
In the hand building portion of the lesson, kids learn how to roll and shape clay, and how to join pieces together using the slip and score method to create solid, food-safe containers after firing and glazing. The lesson we attended focused on creating a pencil pot with an animal theme – there were rabbits, pigs, dogs and cats by the end of the class!
The lessons include a 30 minute meal break between the wheel and hand shaping sessions, where kids can enjoy the adjacent park and have a bite to eat. The Burnside studio is located within a park at the end of a quiet street where there is plenty of lawn to run around, and logs and boulders to sit on. Kids need to bring their own food and drink for break.
All materials are provided, and fired and glazed items are generally available to pick up a few weeks after the lesson. The school holiday classes are a perfect way for kids to slow down and get creative during the school holidays, and are an opportunity to try out pottery in a low-pressure environment.
Cost:
$65 per session.
