West Torrens Memorial Gardens Playground | Hilton | Review

West Torrens Memorial Gardens Playground is a leafy green park with lots of play equipment, table tennis and soccer, and community facilities nearby.

Review by Claire Davill

The playground at the West Torrens Memorial Gardens might just be one of the prettiest playgrounds in Adelaide. Surrounded by lush lawns, leafy green foliage and carefully trimmed hedges, it packs a lot of equipment into a small space.

The central “hill” includes large stepping stones up to the peak, with a broad slide down one side, flanked by climbing ropes. A rope bridge crosses over a chasm, where a pathway leads to the rest of the play equipment.

Here you’ll find plenty of climbing nets, including a rotating climbing net, climbing ropes and a basket swing.

There are wooden springy platforms and a great water play area, with dam gates and a water wheel.

The water play area is partially wheelchair accessible, and there is also a communication board and hand drums nearby.

The park also includes a table top soccer table (foosball) and table tennis. You can borrow bats and balls from the adjacent West Torrens Library.

The gardens also include plenty of benches, some with wireless chargers, a picnic shelter with barbeques, and a war memorial and an old artillery gun.

Things to Consider:

  • The playground is not fenced, but is set at the far end of the park. There is a fence along Somerset Avenue, but there is an open gate, so young children will need close supervision.
  • The playground contains plenty of natural shade, but some areas are in full sunlight at certain times of the day.
  • There are no toilets within the park, but the adjacent West Torrens Library has accessible toilets and baby change facilities in the foyer, and can be accessed during opening hours.

Location:

Brooker Terrace, Hilton. There is off-street parking on the north side of the park, and off-street parking to the south and behind the library.
