Whatever The Weather, We’re In This Together by Jessica Braithwaite & Rebecca Ralfe | Book Review

Jessica Braithwaite by Ben Kelly

Adelaide weather presenter Jessica Braithwaite REALLY loves the weather. She will politely decline offers for a lift to walk in the rain and will stop mid-sentence to look at curious cloud formations.

It’s no surprise then that her debut children’s book is about – you guessed it – the weather.

Whatever the Weather We’re in This Together is a rhyming picture book, co-written with anthropologist and author Rebecca Ralfe, and it comes with a musical surprise.

The vibrant yet sweet illustrations by Laura Bee wonderfully lift the book, along with the fun typography to suit each double-page spread.

Braithwaite and Ralfe take readers through the seasons and different weather conditions whilst interweaving a constant theme of unconditional love.

“I love your hug when the thunder RUMBLES, clouds roll in and the raindrops tumble.”

It’s cosy, it’s delightful, and we agree it’s like “a big warm hug”, as Braithwaite describes her book.

Our pair of junior reviewers, aged three and seven, loved sitting on a picnic rug in the garden, hands on their mother’s lap, to read the book.

Miss 7 gave the book “five stars out of five…or five thousand”, while the toddler enjoyed the rhyming words and gorgeous illustrations.

The book prompted a discussion about the seasons, where Miss 7 told us what she loved about each one, including cuddles in winter – perfectly reinforcing the book’s theme – before decorating it with foliage from the garden.

As an extra special addition, Braithwaite – also a musician and a mum of two – has recorded a lullaby by the same name, with lyrics that match the book. It’s catchy yet sweet, and definitely sway-worthy – perfect for singing a newborn baby to sleep.

This hardcover book would make a wonderful gift, a bedtime book or an anytime-you-need-a-cuddle book. Parents will love reading it to their babies and young children.

Whatever the weather may be.
