Healthy Snack Ideas for Fussy Eaters

Healthy Snack Ideas for Fussy Eaters

Does your toddler like to throw more food on the floor than in their mouths? These healthy and creative snack ideas are so clever they’ll win over even the most difficult of fussy eaters!

This article is written in collaboration with Babysits – Australia’s babysitting community. If you’re looking for babysitters in Adelaide, they’re a great resource to find quality child care providers near you.

Strawberry Butterflies

It’s the little things that make childhood special. These strawberry butterflies are simple yet creative and fun for children.

Ingredients:
● Strawberries
● Mint
● Sprinkles

Method:
1. Slice the strawberries in quarters, being careful not to cut all the way through.
2. Fold down the strawberries to form wings.
3. Arrange on a plate with two mints sprigs as the butterfly ‘antennae’.

Veggie Owl

This is a great way to trick the kids into eating vegetables. After all, no fussy eater can resist an owl-shaped veggie delight! It’s even better if you provide a couple dips to go along with it (hummus and aioli are delicious options).

Ingredients:
● Cucumber
● Carrot
● Red capsicum
● Tomato
● Cherry tomatoes

Method:
1. To create the owl’s head, we cut two pointed ears out of the cucumber peel and made feathers by slicing a carrot into thin strips.
2. To create the big owl eyes, we had to cheat a bit: we filled two bottle lids with sour cream and shaped the pupil using a thin slice of tomato.
3. We created the owl’s belly using layers of thinly sliced cucumbers.
4. We arranged thinly sliced red capiscum and cherry tomatoes to create the owl’s wings.
5. And lastly, we created the owl’s feet with a few thin slices of carrot!

Fruity Peacock

Fruit is delicious as it is, but why not make it extra fun by creating a fruity peacock? This is a clever idea for capturing the imagination of young children.

Ingredients:
● Grapes (preferably green)
● Blueberries
● Pear
● Carrot

Method:
1. Slice the pear and grapes in half.
2. Place one half of the pear on a plate and arrange the grapes as the peacock ‘feathers’.
3. Place the blueberries on top of the halved grapes to create the peacock feather details.
4. With the help of an adult, carve a beak and two legs from a carrot.

Rad Fish

Radishes are a delicious and light vegetable that are great to include in crunchy summer salads. This ‘rad fish’ recipe is a great way to influence younger children to join in and eat their radishes too!

Ingredients:
● Radishes
● Carrots
● Cucumber
● Blueberries

Method:
1. Thinly slice the radishes, carrots and cucumber.
2. Arrange them on a plate (carrot for the head, radish for the body, and cucumber for the ‘tail’ fin).
3. Bring your fish to life by using blueberries to create ‘bubbles’, and you’re done!
