MOD Museum – It’s Complicated Exhibition
MOD at the University of South Australia opened in 2018 and is located next to the Morphett Street Bridge on North Terrace in a spacious and modern building. It is described as a “futuristic museum of discovery, a place to be and be inspired”. It has been created to inspire “young adults aged 15+ about science and technology, showcasing how research shapes our understanding of the world to inform the future.”
The MOD Museum features new exhibitions every year and this year’s 2021 exhibition, It’s Complicated explores the complexity of the world and how different concepts interconnect.
As with previous exhibitions, there are two floors to explore with interesting displays, many of which are interactive and great for teens, although some younger children are bound to enjoy exploring and using the touchscreens and other interactive displays.
Highlights
Level 1 – Cell Invaders
What’s great about MOD Museum is the way knowledge is transferred by visual and interactive displays. This display, in particular, is very interactive – jump on the moving cells to see whether you can hack your immune system to become a cancer killer.
Cave of Sounds
Enter into this mysteriously dark room lightly illuminated by musical instruments, created as an experiment to see how the body can be used to create music. These instruments were created by artists and hackers (yes, you read that correctly) in collaboration.
Wave your hand over an illuminated strip in the ground to produce a new musical sound, different in quality from conventional musical instruments.
There are multiple instruments in this room that can be played all at once. It’s great fun for all ages and quite inspiring.
Chaos Machine – Ground Floor
Move the lever to watch what happens to the double pendulum as it creates patterns on the wall. See whether you can predict what patterns the pendulum is going to make as you move the lever.
Gene Drive
See whether you can change the genetic makeup of a mosquito.
Octopus Estate
Use the touchscreens to care for an octopus and help it to thrive in the wild.
Explore the giant globe of the world and see live weather patterns and fires, see how the world’s atmosphere has been affected by pollution, or explore population density and disease patterns over time.
Sea Habilitation
Humans have intervened in nature and in the process, created new ecosystems. This can be seen with structures like oil rigs in the sea. This display explores whether we should intervene again and remove these manmade structures, or leave them and allow nature to continue to adapt to them.
Custom Made Demonstrator
Machines, smart computers and sensors are contributing to our daily lives and this display questions how we will work with robots in the future. Try controlling the robots in this display.
There are other exhibits to see at the museum, plus a cafe and toilets.
Entry to the museum is free.
