SHANX Mini Golf @ Regency Park – Review

If you haven’t checked out SHANX Mini Golf yet be sure to put it on your list of things to do in Adelaide!

Situated along side the Regency Park Community Golf Course, just 10 minutes from the city, SHANX recently opened their gates and were inundated with groups of families and friends during the recent school holidays. It’s a fabulous outdoor activity for the whole family and very reasonably priced.

The SHANX concept is unique to Australia and is simply a miniature version of a golf course, so the only club you use is a putter.  The course has three main components: the ‘green’ – a smooth putting surface where the holes are located, ‘sand’ bunkers (the white areas) and the ‘rough’ areas around the edges with longer grass. All of the green and white areas are artificial turf (so no actual sand in the kids’ shoes!)

Once you have arrived and checked in at the Pro Shop you select your putter and ball (all inclusive with your playing fee).  There are different sizes and colours so you can each choose one to suit – we also each had a different colour ball so we wouldn’t get mixed up!  Remember to pick up a scoring card and pencil here too.

As you enter the course through the gate you will see a list of course rules (they are also listed on the score card).

Holes 1 to 9 are on the left and 10 to 18 are on the right.  They are all clearly numbered with sign posts that double as drink holders.  There is also an area here to sit and relax too, perfect for a rest stop or you may have a family member coming along to watch, but not playing, who would like to sit down.

Once on the course you are ready to play!  There are two flags on each green – a white one and a yellow one.  The yellow one is a little more challenging, so little ones or those who haven’t played before should aim for the white flag.  There is a slightly raised square where you place the ball to start.

It can be a little tricky reading the slopes and judging the distance.  We found we all improved as we went along, all landing in the bunkers multiple times! It is seriously a lot of fun and we loved the challenge of trying to make par (the score card shows you the par – number of strokes – for each hole). It takes around an hour to play, likely a little longer with young children.

We highly recommend this family friendly golfing experience as a must try next time you have a free weekend, during the holidays or during a mid week break.  It’s perfect for all ages and would especially suit a group of teenagers looking to have some fun.  Take along your competitive spirit and score each hole so you can crown your Shanx family champion at the end of play!

Things to Note:

  • Remember hats, sunscreen and water – it’s a completely outdoor venue.
  • There is music playing from the outdoor speakers (some pretty cool tracks the day we played)!
  • There are multiple outdoor fans with mist – perfect for a warm day.
  • SHANX after dark is played under lights – we plan to do this next time!
  • Toilet facilities are next to the Pro Shop.
  • The SHANX playing area is fully fenced.
  • SHANX offer casual snacks and drinks, but you are welcome to bring your own.
  • The Regency Tavern is right next door for meals (be sure to check when the kitchen closes if planning to eat before/after you play). They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Opening Hours:

  • Monday to Thursday | 10am – 7pm
  • Friday & Saturday | 9am – 10pm
