Wetland & Fitness Circuit | Kensington Gardens Reserve | Review

New Wetland & Walking Track at Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve

The new Wetland project is now open to explore, along with the new Nature Play Space and Kaurna Reflection Area, at Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve.

The Kensington Gardens Reserve Project, located in the south-east corner of Kensington Wama/Kensington Gardens Reserve, was officially opened by Premier Steven Marshall on 18 January 2022.  The project includes an extensive revegetation program with over 40 trees, 1,450 shrubs and 4,300 groundcovers planted in the surrounding area. Native species are being used exclusively for all new plantings.

While the wetland is open, planting will continue throughout January 2022 as well as in the autumn and winter season. It will take 2-3 years for the plants in and around the wetland to fully establish so there is temporary fencing in place to protect the plantings as they mature.  There are signs asking for people to please stay on the paths.

The wetland features viewing decks and an accessible boardwalk over the water.  There are warning signs to remember to supervise children at all times as the water is extremely close and NOT fenced in some areas. There are also ‘No Swimming’ signs for obvious reasons!  The wetland is already home to the families of ducks that resided in the previous artificial ‘duck pond’.

The seating on the round deck that is located over the wetland will be completed in early 2022.

The stepping stones through the creek and wetland are intended to provide children and their carers with an β€˜immersion experience’.

The improvements to Stonyfell Creek include two new bridge crossings that improve public access.  As well as providing visual, recreational and environmental improvements, the functional wetland will treat urban water pollution entering Stonyfell Creek.

Fitness Circuit

For those wanting some exercise, a 1.7km shared-use path now frames the Reserve.  The circuit is pram and wheelchair friendly and perfect for walking, jogging, scooters and bikes. There are also outdoor fitness stations at the northern and southern ends of the reserve.

To extend the hours which the shared use path and fitness stations can be used, the path will be lit with solar path lights. The lights will be mounted on 6m high poles and installed at approximately 35-40 m spacings alongside the path.

The lighting will operate on a β€˜lights out’ curfew. On days with low light conditions, such as cloudy days in winter, the lights may turn off earlier due to the reduced charge of the solar batteries.

Other features include new benches and tables, BBQ facilities and drinking fountain (for people and dogs).

The local 8-court tennis complex has been completed and now features tournament standard tennis courts with lighting, available for club and public use.  There are also new public amenities next to the wetland with men’s, women’s and disabled access bathrooms plus parents room facilities.
