The upgraded playground will have new adventure-themed play equipment catering to both younger children (5-9 years old) and older children (10-14 years old). The most popular attraction has aways been the super long slide which will also be removed, however it will be replaced by a new 19m long slide manufactured from stainless steel.  The new slide will also have a new entry tower and will be partially covered.  Other exciting new features include in-ground trampolines, sand play and water pump, a new 32m flying fox and two swing sets. The park will also have new toilets and picnic facilities.

The Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council is providing funding for the project through its Long-Term Financial Plan, while the State Government allocated $450,000 through its Open Space Grant Funding Program. The overall estimated cost is $1,450,000.

The Dunstan Adventure Playground Upgrade includes:

  • adventure-themed play equipment
  • toilets
  • barbeque and picnic facilities
  • park furniture
  • landscaping and irrigation
  • bank improvements for accessibility, safety and to reduce erosion
  • better paths and connections between Eleventh Avenue/Winchester Street and the River Torrens Linear Park Trail

The Council undertook extensive consultation with the local community– even seeking feedback from local school children about what play equipment they wanted to have installed.  There was also a community onsite drop in event and on online survey, as well as two engagement workshops with the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation, to discuss the cultural history and significance of the area.

Mayor Robert Bria said:

“The much-loved Dunstan Adventure Playground, at St Peters, has several pieces of outdated play equipment requiring regular maintenance.   The playground was constructed in the 1970s and, although it is still very popular, it is in need of a revamp. Local residents and the wider community will benefit greatly benefit from this major upgrade.

“The upgraded playground will provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation, while creating a ‘sense of place’ and strong social interaction. Not only will the new Dunstan Adventure Playground provide much joy to families and the wider community, it will also will provide a boost for the economy and create jobs.”
