Science Alive! Adelaide is back for 2022, with plenty to see and do for kids of all ages. There’s enough here to keep you entertained and thinking for a whole day.

Science Alive is one of Australia’s premier science and technology expos, with displays, activities, challenges and shows to suit all ages.

The pavilion is split into two halves, with a separate performance area for the shows, so make sure you visit all the booths and displays.

Highlights for us included dinosaur building and dinosaur craft, making oobleck (slime) and having pilot photos taken at the Lockheed Martin booth.

There are four shows that are performed twice each during the day (morning and afternoon):

• Animals Anonymous
• Nitro Nat’s Phantastic Physics Show
• Professor Flint’s Jurassic Poop
• The Scientific Bubble Show

These are all worth a watch, so make note of the performance times and make sure you arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the showtime if you want to get a seat. You do not need to purchase separate tickets for the shows – entry is all-inclusive.

The booths and displays cover all sorts of aspects of STEM subjects, from botany to engineering, and robots to marine life. There is an impressive Lego display that is not to be missed, including a great ball contraption and a Rubiks cube solving machine.

There are ample opportunities for kids to make items to take home, challenge themselves with puzzles and engineering builds, and to watch 3D printers at work, robots battling it out in an arena, and to try out virtual reality headsets. There are also bugs and animals to look at and hold (if they are feeling brave!).

Things to Consider:

• There is ample parking off of Rose Terrace to the south of Goyder Pavilion, which was free when we attended
• There are two entry times – 9am and 11am. It gets busier as the day goes on, so consider the 9am entry if you can
• There are food and drink options, both in the pavilion and just outside, including pretzels, donuts, coffee, gozleme and pies and pasties. The prices are on the expensive side, so take this into consideration
• Arrive early for the shows if you want to be close to the front. There are lots of seats but these fill up fast. There is also space to sit on the floor near the stage, but this fills up quickly too!
• There are queues for some of the more popular displays, particularly later in the day. Displays most likely to have queues were Animals Anonymous, Bugs n Slugs and Ignite VR headsets. Head to these first if you want to avoid the queues.
• Bring a bag with you to carry the crafts and slime that the kids get to make, as well as various freebies (watch out for stress balls, caps, stickers and mini torches at the booths)
• The right side of the hall (from the entry point) tends to be a bit quieter and is smaller and more spread out, if you need a bit of a breather from the crowds
