Patch Theatre’s Wonderverse is an immersive sensory experience tailored to kids.

Wonderverse is a journey full of light and sound to indulge your senses, with three separate experiences offered in a condensed and entertaining half hour session.

Review by Adaire Prosser

Wonderverse by Patch Theatre offers a complete sensory experience. Moving through three separate rooms, you are introduced to a different experience incorporating light, sound and the relationship between them. This program has been created with kids aged 4-12 years in mind, but all ages will enjoy the sensory journey.

The first room has been darkened and has glow in the dark stools and hammocks to relax on while gazing at the ceiling. Here, a light show is offered, reminiscent of a starry night or fireflies darting across the sky. The commentary from our three year old reviewer was “it’s just like magic”.

Room two will get you up and moving. Spotlights encourage movement across the room as they dart and spin at different speeds and  formations. All the kids had a lot of fun with this one as the lights changed colour and shape, and responded to being jumped on.

The third and final room got everyone involved with flashlights that prompted a unique sound. The flashlight sequence prompted different patterns of sound that was remixed into a dance track. Everyone was encouraged to stand up and dance, and the kids even got to pick the moves for us all to follow! After dancing to the soundtrack, everyone lay down to watch as an illuminated parachute made its way up to the ceiling and back down in a mesmerising way.

There was a lot on offer in this half hour program and it was enjoyed by all ages. The highlights for us were the second room with the follow the lights game, and watching the illuminated parachute right at the end of the show. There were some momentary periods of darkness which may upset some children. The central city location means you can also find plenty to do before or after your show.

Wonderverse, presented by Patch Theatre and specially commissioned by the University of Adelaide for their 150th year, is showing at Bonython Hall until 20 October – join the waitlist for free tickets or try your luck at the door.
