Anzac Day in Adelaide | 25 April 2014

Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance both here in Australia and New Zealand. It is commemorated by both countries on 25 April every year to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought during World War I at Gallipoli.Β  Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, with 2014 the 99th anniversary.

Anzac Day has grown to become one of the most important national days in Australia.Β  As well as recognising the sacrifice and service of all Australians who have served in a war or a peacekeeping operation, Anzac Day is a day for all Australians to reflect on the special Anzac spirit and its place in Australia today.

Young children have an opportunity to understand the importance of this national day through the many real life stories of sacrifices and heroism shared through the media and through older family members. Learning about Anzac Day helps children to understand the life and times of Australia, its people and what life was like during times of war..

To help teach children about Anzac Day there is a book by South Australian author Phil Cummings and illustrated by Owen Swan titled Anzac Biscuits.

Rachel is in the kitchen, warm and safe. Her father is in the trenches, cold and afraid. When Rachel makes biscuits for her father, she adds the love, warmth and hope that he needs.Β  This is a touching story of a family torn apart by war but brought together through the powerful simplicity of ANZAC Biscuits.

The book is available at selected book stores.
