New Sensory Room Opens at Discovery Parks – Goolwa.
A new sensory room at Discovery Parks – Goolwa gives children and families a quiet place to reset during their stay, while also helping shape the future of more inclusive holidays in Australia as part of a 12-month research project.
The new space provides somewhere quiet to retreat, regulate and reset before returning to enjoy the rest of their holiday. It has been developed using evidence-based sensory principles to help reduce stress and cognitive load and support nervous system regulation.
The Goolwa sensory room is also part of a new 12-month research project into sensory regulation in holiday environments with Discovery Parks inviting guests, local families, carers and individuals from across the Fleurieu Peninsula to participate by sharing their experience. Feedback gathered during the study will help researchers understand what works in a real-world holiday setting and could ultimately help create more inclusive tourism experiences at other holiday parks and destinations.
The sensory space was developed with sensory design specialist Dr Bliss Cavanagh and Creative Sensory Spaces. Dr Cavanagh said the philosophy behind the space is simple: the environment should do the work.
“The environment has been designed to reduce cognitive load, gently guide attention and support nervous system regulation,” she said. “When people are able to regulate and recover from sensory overwhelm, they’re often able to re-engage with the broader venue experience rather than needing to leave altogether.”
Discovery Parks says the approach may help people recover from sensory overwhelm in as little as 10 minutes.
