The Seedling Exchange – Free Nature Festival Activity on North Terrace, Adelaide
Plant a native seed and watch a living installation grow at The Seedling Exchange, a free Nature Festival activity in the heart of Adelaide.
Presented by Nature Festival and the City of Adelaide, The Seedling Exchange is a temporary public pavilion and living installation located on North Terrace, in front of the State Library of South Australia.
Visitors are invited to step inside, collect a cup, add soil, choose a native seed, plant it and give it its first water. You can then take your seedling home to nurture or leave it at the pavilion to grow alongside seedlings planted by other visitors.
It’s a simple, hands-on Nature Festival activity for kids, families and visitors of all ages, and you don’t need any gardening experience to take part.
As thousands of native seeds are planted throughout Nature Festival in Adelaide, The Seedling Exchange will gradually transform into a collective nursery – a living record of thousands of small acts of care.
The seedlings will eventually make their way into homes, gardens, schools and community spaces, allowing the project to continue long after the temporary North Terrace installation has finished.
The activity also gives children and adults an easy introduction to growing native plants from seed, while encouraging a connection with nature and Adelaide’s local environment.
With support from the City of Adelaide Biodiversity Team, selected native seeds will also be propagated during the festival and grown for future planting in Adelaide’s public spaces.
The Seedling Exchange is a quick and easy activity to add to a visit to Nature Festival, the State Library of South Australia or North Terrace, with participation taking just a few minutes.

25 September – 11 October:
- Saturday to Thursday | 11am – 3pm
- Fridays 11 am – 6pm

- Caters for people who are blind or have vision loss.
- Caters for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
- Caters for people who use a wheelchair.
- Caters for people with high support needs who travel with a support person.
