BEEP review

The brand new show from the makers of Grug, BEEP has a positive message about friendship and learning to welcome new people into your world.

Review by Susannah Marks

BEEP is set in a little village where each day is reassuringly familiar to the one before. The main character is Mort, a stripy, round creature who lives in a tree and speaks in single syllables. Mort and the other creatures in the village thrive on their predictable routine – every day the children go to school, some of the adults go to work (via an elevator set inside the tree) and the other creatures play.

Mort loves eating the molly melons that fall off the tree when the wind blows, and chasing fuzzles (which are fuzzy yellow balls).

Every evening the village goes to sleep and then the wind blows and wakes up a bird who perches on top of the tree who then squawks and wakes up the village.

Then one day their tranquil little world is changed by the arrival of a robot girl named Beep. She’s noisy and has flashing lights, and some of the village creatures are scared by her. Will she find her way home, and will she and Mort become friends?

What we thought of BEEP

My fellow reviewer, aged six, and I were lucky enough to see BEEP on the weekend and the Space Theatre was packed with an enthusiastic crowd. The three puppeteers did an excellent job of bringing Mort and the other puppets to life, and also narrating the story. We loved the many sound effects, the gorgeous colourful and very whimsical set, and the puppets’ comic moments.

The Windmill Theatre Company’s new production is aimed at children aged one to seven and although we saw plenty of toddlers enjoying the show, we wondered if it might be best suited to kids around 4 and up who will likely appreciate the slower pace of this show, and its message about making friends and helping others.

It’s playful and interactive and if you loved Grug you’ll probably love this one too.

NOTE: Beep is held at the Space Theatre. There is currently no through access to the Space Theatre from King William Road or the Festival Theatre.

❤️ To get there, approach the Dunstan Playhouse and Space Theatre from the laneway between the Intercontinental Hotel and Adelaide Railway Station, then walk north to the Riverbank. Or cross the Riverbank Footbridge at Adelaide Oval heading south to the Riverbank.

❤️ Remember to allow extra time to get to the Space Theatre while the Adelaide Festival Centre’s renovations are going on.

Fun on the Adelaide Riverbank

On a sunny day there’s so much to see and enjoy along the riverbank. My kids always ask to go on the paddleboats at Torrens Lake and on a sunny day they look like a lot of fun.

You could also check out the newly renovated Lounder’s Boathouse Cafe, which serves all your favourite standard cafe food to enjoy, sitting overlooking the River Torrens. The redevelopment of the original boatshed was given a Heritage Award this year, and the cafe is ideally located to grab a quick coffee and something delicious after a trip to the Festival Centre.

Roti canai and iced milo at Mamak Corner

One of our go-to places when we find ourselves in Adelaide city with kids is Mamak Corner. They make delicious tasty Malaysian street food. It’s cheap and cheerful and close to Rundle Mall and to the Adelaide Festival Theatre.

We particularly like their roti canai, nasi lemak and iced milo. The kids love seeing the roti breads being made from scratch and flipped into the air by the cooks, the food usually comes out quickly, and then the kids get to eat the roti with their fingers. Win win.

About Susannah: I’m a mum to three boys and a little girl and I am learning to embrace the chaos. I love my morning coffee, exercise, cranking up some good tunes on the stereo, and heading away to new places on holiday. Originally from New Zealand, I now call Adelaide home and I love getting out and about and exploring all the fabulous things for families to do in Adelaide.
