Review of The Adelaide International Kite Festival 2016
It was a glorious day at Semaphore for the Adelaide International Kite Festival 2016. As you can imagine flying kites is dependent on weather conditions. During the weekend the winds were not always favourable. We happened to pick the best time to go. Finally on Monday afternoon, the last day of the kite festival, the skies were clear and the wind picked up.
We were able to see the most kites flying together in the sky all weekend. It was a glorious Autumn day – sunny and warm with a beautiful breeze. Many families turned out to enjoy the festival and it was great to see plenty of kites flying high over in the public arenas too. It was just the perfect day for it.
The Kite Festival was a well organised event. It was located right next to the Semaphore carnival area where there are rides for the kids and sideshow fun as well as the mini golf, waterslide and Semaphore carousel. The fully fenced playground was very popular with great equipment for young children.
Semaphore to Fort Glanville Railway
The old Semaphore steam train provided additional fun along the foreshore.
We loved seeing families flying their own kites. The photo below shows a 7 year old boy flying a kite which is the same one that we purchased from the Free as a Bird Kites stall for $25. You can just see the kite where I’ve put the pink arrow – it was SO high! It stayed up there for practically the whole time we were there!
Festival Market Place
The Festival Market Place had a great mix of food and craft stalls plus there was the kiosk also serving food and drinks. We didn’t experience long queues and even though there were many people there, it never felt too crowded.
Skate park
We love the little skate park along the foreshore right near the playground. It’s the perfect size for younger kids, where they aren’t being bowled over by teenagers.
The jetty
The jetty provided a great view of the flying kites, and it’s always a nice walk to the end to see how the fishing is going.
This was a great family event – we totally recommend a visit. It’s usually on during the Easter long weekend.
