Adelaide Biplanes Cafe at Aldinga Airfield, Review
By Jo Parkinson
Up, up and away! If you’re a fan of flight, food and fun, then you will love Adelaide Biplanes Cafe!
Located at Aldinga Airfield, this is not your usual dining experience. Sit back and relax, as you enjoy delicious food, picturesque scenery and watch light aircraft takeoff and land. The airfield is a training facility for pilots, so there are usually a few planes coming and going regularly. Views of the hills provide a stunning backdrop, and there are often planes parked outside the hangar so you can get a good look at them even when they aren’t flying.
Cafe
The interior of the cafe is decorated in a gorgeous vintage style, with airplane memorabilia filling the shelves and walls. Couches and a fireplace give a homely feel, and large windows provide a great view of the airfield. Friendly staff are happy to take your order and are very knowledgeable about any questions you have about the planes or airfield.
For the ultimate viewing experience, head out to the front deck. This space is set up comfortably with chairs, tables and pretty plants. As the planes start up or come in to park, they drive right past and it’s amazing (and noisy!) to see them up close. There are also some tables around the side in an undercover area if you are coming in a larger group.
Menu
The food and drink offered here is simple but delicious. The cakes are all made fresh on site and there is a range of gourmet toasted sandwiches available. For drinks, there is a choice of coffee, tea, milkshakes, or cans of soft drink. The babycinos come with a spoonful of choc chips for an extra treat! The kitchen is open from 10am – 4pm daily, with coffee and cake only served from 2:30 onwards.
There is a range of merchandise available for purchase too, including t-shirts, hats, toy planes, yoyos and more.
Activities
Kids will love pretending to be a pilot on the model cockpit chair, pressing buttons and using the lever.
Outside, the grounds are well maintained. There are large trees providing shade, and a good-sized grassed area. This is great for the kids to run around on while they wait for food or planes to come. Around the side, there is even a bocce area if you fancy a game.
Planes
Being an airfield, there is of course the opportunity to take to the sky. Adelaide Biplanes offer Biplane flights, Aerobatic flights, Scenic flights, and a Flight simulator, however, you will need to call ahead to arrange bookings for this.
Visiting Adelaide Biplanes is truly a fantastic and memorable experience, and we highly recommend checking it out. Whilst in the area, you could even turn it into a day trip; visit the wine region of McLaren Vale, historic township of Willunga, or beautiful beaches at Aldinga and Port Willunga.
