Alec Johnston Park | Hahndorf | Review

The playground at Alec Johnston Park in Hahndorf has it all for the kids who love to climb!

Review by Adaire Prosser

Located in the heart of Hahndorf, the playground at Alec Johnston Park has something to challenge climbers of all abilities. Easily accessible from the main street, it is the perfect stop for the kids if you are dining or shopping in the hills. There are two large equipment sets, both equipped with slides and ropes galore. Everything from rope bridges, a suspended rope and even a rope ceiling to navigate to a large tube slide. Kids will be able to test their potential on the wide range of obstacles.

Our four year old reviewer loved testing his ability on the twisted rope frame and rock climbing walls. The slides and firepole were a lot of fun to come back down on.

The playground also has a carousel, a seesaw, a net swing and a swing set. These may suit younger children who are still finding their climbing confidence.

The park itself is beautiful, with plenty of lawn, shady trees and undercover BBQ’s and picnic benches. There is a toilet block and scenic fountain closer to the main street. There are creeks that pass through the park that run during the wetter months with a beautiful wooden footbridge passing over.

Things to Consider:

  • While ideal for older kids, toddlers and younger kids may have difficulty climbing this playground and there are a lot of open sections. Young children may be better suited to the Pioneer Memorial Gardens Playground, also on the Hahndorf main street.
  • Bring hats & sunscreen as there is limited shade on the play equipment.
  • Keep an eye on younger children around the creek especially in the wetter months.
