This year’s Aquafest celebrates the 60th birthday of the Goolwa Aquatic Club.
Aquafest is a non-competitive fun day out for Goolwa Aquatic Club friends and boats. The Saturday is an open waters affair where you can run your boat as often, and for as long as you like. The buoys will be set so you can familiarise yourselves with the course.
The format of the Sunday is run to visually appear like a race meet, but is intended to entertain the spectators and drivers with a demonstration of what it was like when the older boats were used in their heyday. `Like style’ boats are grouped together in classes, where they will do four demonstration laps of the course set out with turn buoys. They will have six or seven separate classes of boats, and they aim to complete three demo runs for each class.
There will also be a classic car display along with stunt and vintage aeroplane flyovers to buzz the crowd. The event is fully catered with food and drink stalls and entertainment for the kids.
The Goolwa Aquatic Club was first established in 1959 by a group of local speedboat enthusiasts and was founded on speedboat racing. The clubs first Commodore was Jack Newcombe of Goolwa and he held office from 1959 to 1963. The Goolwa Aquatic Club prides itself on strong local atmosphere and encourages all types of boating activities and aquatic disciplines. The club has a strong community spirit and supports worthwhile causes.
The “Lakeside Goolwa” retirement village is the major sponsor of this year’s Aquafest.
