Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

Beerenberg is an iconic South Australian brand loved by many and after taking the time to visit, explore and taste what it offers, its easy to see why. As you make your way through the town of Hahndorf and lay your eyes on the dark green visitor centre, you know you are in for a treat. The visitor experience centre was unveiled in 2022 and includes a farm café, dairy, private tasting room for cooking demonstrations, event spaces and a new farm shop. It feels well thought out, upmarket but also the type of place you feel comfortable enjoying with your family.

Walking through the doors there is a spinning strawberry that catches my daughter’s attention. Moving further into the space we cast our eyes to the floor and notice that we are guided to the farm shop by a trail of strawberries painted onto the floor. It’s a lovely retail space and somewhere that is way too easy to spend way too long and way too much money in. They have picnic baskets, chutney, their signature strawberry jam and even a plush strawberry toy called Alby which is named after the Albion variety of strawberries that they grow.

With a hungry kid in tow and an inviting café space to explore, we go and check out the farm café and dairy. Breakfast features old classics such as avocado toast, bacon and eggs and of course french toast complete with fresh strawberries, Beerenberg blue gum honey, ice cream and blueberries. Knowing full well that ice cream is on the cards for later, we order two salads and a healthy kids snack plate.

Whilst waiting for the food to arrive we visit the kids corner and enjoy the colouring in sets provided. The food comes out looking like a work of art and the colourful fruit plus edible flowers is a feast for the eyes. After devouring the food, the next destination is the dairy, a cute little ice creamery boasting a range of flavours. My daughter enjoys taste testing the various flavours and finally settles on a scoop of vanilla in a cone adorned with chocolate freckles. Right next to the dairy there is also a tempting chocolate fountain where you can purchase a cup of chocolate drizzled strawberries.

After eating, indulging and exploring the visitor centre we make our way to the famous strawberry patch. On the way to the patch we notice a giant strawberry with wholes cut out, which of course we can’t resist taking photos in. After taking way too many photos we follow the signs to the patch and spend the afternoon walking through the rows, filling up our box and eating our weight in strawberries. We leave with full bellies, a box full of delicious handpicked strawberries and special family memories of a lovely time.
