Birthday for Babies at Alfie’s Butterfly Market
This year, the third annual Birthday for Babies is to be held in remembrance of babies lost to stillbirth.
Birthday for Babies is an annual event held at Alfie’s Butterfly Market at Partridge House, Glenelg. Join Still Aware for a birthday celebration for all the babies no longer with us. There is a special twilight butterfly release at the market and you can release a live butterfly in remembrance of a special child or children born still. The event began in 2015 in remembrance of the over 2500 babies born still in Australia every year and to raise awareness of the 6 families daily affected by such tragedy.
Still Aware, Australia’s leading organisation in stillbirth awareness, is inviting members of the public to join them at the annual Birthday for Babies this February. The event, now in its third year, is held in remembrance of the thousands of babies who are stillborn every year. In Australia, this number is currently five per day.
According to Still Aware Founder, Claire Foord, the event not only provides an opportunity for parents, but also their families and friends who have supported them through one of the most difficult times in their lives.
“Birthdays for Babies was originally designed to honour my daughter Alfie, who would have been turning three this year,” she said. “When we realised that there is very little ongoing emotional support for families who have experienced stillbirth, we decided to expand the event, and to also include Alfie’s Butterfly Market, which will feature local stallholders who have very generously donated their time for the night. There will be a family friendly picnic and a twilight butterfly release, to honour all of the babies who are no longer with us.”
Still Aware aims to reduce the number of still births in Australia by empowering parents-to-be with the knowledge and confidence to know when something might be wrong.
“Up to 30% of stillbirths are preventable,” said Ms Foord. “So while we will continue to honour those babies no longer with us every February, ultimately our goal is to see as few new faces every year as possible.”
Admission is FREE but donations would be greatly appreciated.
