Connect and play in your street – City of Onkaparinga
The City of Onkaparinga is encouraging residents to join their 1000 Play Streets Project, designed to encourage neighbours to connect socially and to allow children to play safely on their closed street. Residents who live in low traffic neighbourhoods in the City of Onkaparinga will be able to register their interest to have their street nominated as part of the program. The council will then provide a range of sporting equipment such as bats, balls and skipping ropes, and assist with planning including road closures and COVID-19 considerations.
The community-based program is part of an initiative to see residential streets across Australia once again become safe places where families, neighbours, bike riders and pedestrians can meet and children can play outside daily.
The City of Onkaparinga has received a $70,000 state government ‘Open Your World’ community grant to bring the 1000 Play Streets to its council area to help address the issue of decreased physical activity and play due to COVID-19.
Neighbourhood streets will be able to nominate to plan and organise their own play street events with the support of council staff. Organised street play projects will be held in four locations, each hosting three sessions with approximately 100 people per session.
Sessions will run for approximately two hours and include the use of sporting equipment such as bats, balls and skipping ropes, and council will coordinate the necessary permits and road closures to reduce the burden on volunteer neighbours. Council will also help ensure the sessions meet COVID-safe guidelines.
