Davenport Square Playground | Macclesfield | Review

Davenport Square offers a great family play space in the middle of charming Macclesfield.

Review by Adaire Prosser

Davenport square offers a large open space the whole family will enjoy. There are three different play equipment options for various ages. There is an option for competent toddlers, and two other sections with more challenging climbing equipment and a larger slide for older kids.

An assortment of bridges and tunnels will keep the kids active and busy as they make their way through.  A swing set is also included, which was under maintenance during our visit.

A rotating ‘Orbiter’ will challenge their balance and grip as it swings them around.

Adjacent to the playground there is a covered picnic bench and a kid sized picnic table. An undercover electric BBQ is situated by the main road.

The toilet facilities are clean and modernized, and there is a cute little book swap library packed with kids books.

The square also has a large grassed area with a surrounding path perfect for bikes, and there is a skate ramp for kids with scooters or skateboards. You will find plenty for the nature lovers and explorers with a native garden and lots of big shady trees on the perimeter. An area with exercise equipment is also located within the square, towards the main road.

The area is within walking distance to the main street of Macclesfield, which is worth a walk to explore. If you are planning a trip, mark your calendar for the first Sunday of the month (excluding December and January) when the local markets are on.

Things to Consider:

  • While there are shady areas, the main playground is not shaded, so bring hats and sunscreen.
  • The playspace is not fully enclosed, but is partially fenced from the carpark and road.
  • Some children may need help getting down from the climbing equipment.
  • While there are a lot of options, small toddlers will still require supervision and help on the equipment.
  • Bring helmets and bikes for the paths and ramps.
  • If you have mini booklovers, bring some books along to swap at the little library.

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

The main street of Macclesfield is within walking distance from the square.

  • The Macclesfield Hotel is family friendly and serves noteworthy schnitzels.
  • The Macclesfield General Store serves coffee and food for dine in or take-away.

Location:

Davenport Square is located in central Macclesfield on Venables Street. There is space for parking on Parin Street.
