Disco Wonderland – Dancing Til Dawn

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

A shimmering musical sensation that will have you smiling from start to finish, bopping in your chair, singing along, and dancing (yay to finally being able to dance again)!

Disco Wonderland transports us to the era of New York nightclub Studio 54, with all the groovy sequins and hot pants, in a glittering feast.

Talented former Australian Idol singer Paulini, headlines the show with the smooth moving singer-dancer Timomatic (from Australia’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance). They are joined by talented South Australian performers Philippa Lynas, Mark Stefanoff and Amelia Sanzo, along with local band Er@ser Description.

The singers all shine with powerhouse vocals in solos and duets, ballads, mashups and dynamic dance numbers, with some fabulous highlights. Lynas gets the party started with a glamorous strong opening. Paulini hits all the right notes in a soulful version of ‘MacArthur Park’ and a jazzy ‘I Will Survive’. Timomatic aces a Jackson’s medley; Stefanoff sings and swings effortlessly on an aerial hoop to ‘Young Hearts Run Free’. Accomplished dancer Sanzo weaves the story together, bringing all the groove to the 70s dance floor vibe, with choreography by Brendan Yeates (Hamilton, West Side Story, Matilda). There are some sexy dance moves (it is a nightclub scene after all), including a dance duet with a shirtless Timomatic, but it’s still within the parameters of the family friendly time slot of the 6.20pm evening show and 12.30pm matinees, and is rated PG.

Other songs include ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’, ‘If You Could Read My Mind’, ‘Stayin’ Alive’; ‘That’s the Way (I Like It)’; ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’; ‘Love to Love You Baby’ and ‘Blame it on the Boogie’. A shout out to the talented musicians as well for their non-stop brilliant performance.

The energy of the show is infectious and the audience don’t need to be asked twice to get up and boogie with old favourites like ‘YMCA’ and ‘We are Family’.

Disco Wonderland is a musical treat that’s a huge bundle of fun, and is sure to put you in a good mood. It would be hard not to have a good time.

Presented by Andrew Kay and Release Creative, it’s showing at The Peacock at Gluttony (indoor tent, no mask required) until 21 March 2021.
