Frida & Diego: Love & Revolution Adelaide Exhibition

If you’ve been thinking of taking your budding artists to the Art Gallery of SA, there is no better time than now! The beloved works of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera & their Mexican contemporaries are currently on display until 17 September 2023.

Review by Sharon Harrington

Frida Kahlo is considered by many to be one of the most famous female artists of all time. She is a 20th century Mexican artist renowned for her numerous self-portraits (many painted when bedridden), bold colourful paintings and non-conformist views.

It is worth having the kids read the Frida section of Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls before heading to the art gallery. Frida had an incredible life, which only adds to the experience of viewing her works and photographs.

Frida- A role model for resilience

To say Frida is an impressive example of resilience is an understatement. Despite contracting polio as a child which left her with a limp and surviving a traumatic accident that broke her spine and caused other terrible injuries, Frida lived life to the fullest and created the most fascinating artwork.

Frida’s husband, Diego Rivera, is also widely considered to be one of the most influential Mexican artists of the 20th century. He is known for his large-scale murals that are reproduced for the exhibition along with other pieces.

Art Gallery of SA’s website shares a little more about the pair in the extract below:

Love, passion and politics lie at the heart of Frida & Diego. The couple, radical in their art and politics, were at the forefront of the artistic and cultural avant-garde in post-revolution Mexico from the 1920s to the 1950s. Today they are worshipped globally for their fusion of traditional Mexican folk art and international modernism.

Our Play & Go kids impressed us with their attention span and genuine interest in the exhibition, which lasted about half an hour for the six year old and a little longer for the eight year old.

Free paper flower making activity at The Studio

After visiting the exhibition, take the kids along to the FREE paper flower making activity in The Studio at the Art Gallery. It’s a beautiful bright space for children to create their own paper flowers to take home or add to the Frida collection.

Frida & Diego City Trail

The exhibition has even inspired a Frida & Diego City Trail. The trail features more than 30 pop up experiences around Adelaide. Think kid’s art workshops, paint and sip evenings for adults, a doll hunt on O’Connell and a recreation of Frida’s home set up in Rundle Mall.
