Game On 3 | Adelaide Fringe 2022 | Review

Game On 3 | Adelaide Fringe 2022 | Review

★★★★★ for fast paced fun and video game trivia galore

Matty Grey is loud, enthusiastic, and will (mildly) insult your children! The intrigue starts before entering the venue, with adults given mystery bags and select adults given beanies to wear. Children are instructed NOT to open the bags, but you’ll know when you need them.

Matty then launches into a fast-paced show full of video game history, facts and lots and lots of adult references that fly right over the children’s heads. There is plenty of audience participation, both kids and adults, with soft flying projectiles, a very slow game of real-life pong, and the chance to throw poo. His “creepy slenderman” sidekick adds to the laughs and adjudicates the quiz where kids are pitted against the adults in their videogame knowledge.

This show is definitely suited to older kids, but younger kids will get a kick out of it too, especially if they’re avid gamers and don’t mind a performance with a lot of shouting. Parents are kept engaged and also end up the butt of many jokes (some quite literally).

The venue is small and tightly packed, but the stage is high and visibility is good from most seats. The best seats are definitely front and centre, so it’s first come, first served, but be warned that the front rows have a higher chance of being picked on.

This is the third iteration of Matty’s Game On shows, and while we haven’t attended his previous shows, there were audience members who had and obviously enjoyed themselves with lots of new material.
