Hahndorf Farm Barn
Take a short drive through the town of Hahndorf, past the Beerenberg Strawberry Farm and you’ll soon arrive at the quaint country property that’s home to the Hahndorf Farm Barn.
A combination of animal nursery and wildlife park, the Farm Barn is a must visit for children who wish to see, touch, hold and experience animals in a safe, friendly environment. From cuddling fluffy chicks who have only just hatched to bottle feeding excited little lambs, children are encouraged to interact with the animals and are educated in simple, easy to understand terms along the way.
There is ample on site parking as you arrive at the Farm Barn, and tickets are purchased on the day from the front office located in the barn.
The staff are friendly and helpful and as soon as we stepped through the front doors the children were drawn to the baby chicks and invited to have a hold. A staff member was on hand to catch the little balls of fluff and place them in the children’s hands one by one, and a little further in we found bigger chicks which again were able to be nursed.
Rabbits and guinea pigs
The rabbits and guinea pigs are a huge hit with the little ones, as well as a few older kids I noticed! The children are welcome to sit in with them and when they proved too hard to catch, another helpful staff member stepped in to help place an animal on each child’s lap. There are carrots provided to hand feed the rabbits and guinea pigs which they nibbled on endlessly. As much as I knew the question was coming and as cute as they are, it was still hard to resist and say no, we can’t have a guinea pig!
Bottle feeding the lambs
A highlight of visiting an animal nursery such as this is bottle feeding the lambs. Children are asked to volunteer and those who do are given a bottle to pass through the fence as the lambs push and shove each other aside to get their fill.
The barn is also home to an assortment of reptiles and on weekends, public and school holidays there is a reptile show at 12:30 each day. Other activities at the Farm Barn include milking the cow as well as bottle feeding the baby goats and calves.
Feeding the animals
There is animal feed available for purchase which you can also take outside to feed the wildlife park residents. Here you will find deer, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, ducks and peacocks. There are also some cheeky miniature ponies, a Shetland pony and a couple of donkeys – the white one is ‘Jack’ and he was more than happy to be fed! Some of the feathered friends you’ll see include an assortment of different chooks, owls and kookaburras.
I have to admit the kids were very brave to feed the emu….me, not so much!
The grounds are lovely and you’ll find BBQ’s and picnic tables should you wish to bring along some lunch and sit down for a break. Coffee and refreshments are also available.
Pony rides are available on weekends, public and school holidays for children aged between 2 and 12 years (for an extra cost). The pony rides are fully supervised, helmets are provided and the ponies are led by trained staff.
The Farm Barn can also host birthday parties, corporate events and they run school holiday programs too.
