Hamdorf Café & Miniature Guinea Pig Village | Review
Hamdorf Café & Miniature Guinea Pig Village is a community café with a purpose and the ultimate destination for guinea pig lovers!
Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
If you’re looking for a reason to jump in the car and head for the hills, the recently opened Hamdorf Café and guinea pig village is your answer. Located in a former cheese cellar on the main street of Hahndorf, sits Hamdorf, part café, part guinea pig village and proud NDIS provider. Hamdorf is more than a cute and quirky café but a workplace that provides employment to people with intellectual disabilities and a unique experience for patrons.

Walking up to Hamdorf and entering through the glass doors, the guinea pig theme immediately catches your attention. There is guinea pig artwork, tops, toys and even the coffee cups and cutlery holders are adorned with guinea pig pictures. The space is light, bright and welcoming. The menu features banh mi “guinea rolls”, pies, pastries and even a fritz’s mini menu for the kids with nuggets and chips, hot dogs and pizza. There is the usual selection for coffee and hot drinks and a cabinet full of tempting treats. We also saw posters plastered around the place showing that you can book in for a guinea pig high tea birthday party too.

The café is a lively spot for breakfast, brunch and lunch with plenty of seating and warm service. However, a big draw card for this business is their guinea pig village. To enter we paid $5 (as at January 2026) at the front counter and then you make your way outside and downstairs. Once inside the village you have the chance to meet the five guinea pigs that are running around and also see the incredibly well done village which is a miniature replica of the town of Hahndorf. There are plenty of opportunities for pats and to feed them. There is also a dedicated seating area for guinea pig selfies. We didn’t catch the name of all of the little ones but the two guinea pigs we met were called Bung Fritz and Milo and they were so sweet!

The miniature village is small in size and dimly lit. To access this attraction, you need to walk down some stairs. This is one of the reasons for an entry fee as they are raising money for an elevator to accommodate people with physical disabilities. Therefore, people with mobility issues or vision impairments might have challenges so this is something to consider. It was relatively quiet on a week day but being Adelaide’s first and only dedicated guinea pig café its likely to be busy on the weekends and during school holidays.

Hamdorf café and guinea pig village is located at the start of the main street of Hahndorf. This means it’s a great first stop on a Hahndorf day trip. Not only is the guinea pig theme and village such a playful concept, the core purpose of supporting NDIS participants makes it even more special and a worthwhile stop. So next time you find yourself planning an Adelaide hills visit make sure the Hamdorf Café and guinea pig village is on the agenda, your future self and your family will thank you!

What we like about it
- So many things! The incredible attention to detail with the guinea pig theme, the ethos behind the business, the lovely light filled cafe and cool underground village space and most of all the opportunity to get up close to a cute little guinea pig.
Things to consider
- There is a walk downstairs to access the guinea pig village so this is important to note for people with mobility issues
- The miniature village is a small space and with a few people in there it can feel crowded
- It is dark in the village so if you have vision impairments its important to be aware of this
- There is lots of street parking available and a free public car park nearby
