Have you noticed? Adelaide has turned into circus central! Join in the fun by learning some circus skills of your very own, near the heart of town.
Every March, the streets and parks of Adelaide are filled with circus performers aplenty. You might have already been to see performers fly high on the silks, juggle multiple objects, or display gasp-inducing acrobatic skills. But have you ever wondered how these amazing people start their unique career and how many of those skills you might be able to try? The answer lies behind the doors of the SA Circus Centre, home of Cirkidz.
A hop, skip, and jump away from the CBD, you will find a space to help achieve anyone’s dream of running away and joining the circus. Each day of the week Cirkidz are home to circus stars in the making; hooping, juggling, balancing, and bouncing their way to fitness, confidence, and perhaps even stardom! With over 50 skills to learn, and classes for ages 2.5 to 60+, there is never a dull moment. Inspired by what you’ve seen in the Fringe? Cirkidz currently have room for 30 new friends to join them before their next intake in Semester 2, and they’d love for you to join the fun by booking a free trial class for your child and a friend, or even yourself!
Did you know that the local circus component of the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Festival is filled with Cirkidz trainers, students, and graduates? Cirkidz are proud to report that the Time In Space company, formed by the school’s graduates, even won ‘Pick Of The Fringe’ for their show The Displaced! Another crew of Cirkidz graduates formed Gravity and Other Myths, best known for their constant world touring and sell-out, award-winning shows. The skills they learnt in the Performance Program have their basis in Cirkidz weekly beginners classes, available to all. So why not challenge yourself to add a few unique skills to your toolbox? You will soon see gains in coordination, confidence, and community (and you never know, you might just turn into the next big circus sensation!)
Circus is the perfect match for school-aged kids who want to complement their sports activities or just try something completely different. After regular school hours end, the centre starts filling with lucky regular attendees who get to learn from a school with a difference (the primary-school aged regulars enjoy a $50 saving on their fees thanks to the 2018 schools sports voucher). For those who can’t make it weekly, Cirkidz hold their very popular school holiday programs every season. Friendship groups can attend circus together; there’s no better way to learn about teamwork when you’re part of a human pyramid!
