First Creek Wetland
A wonderful new place to explore has opened at the Adelaide Botanic Garden. First Creek Wetland was officially opened in November 2013 and is located in the south-east corner between the Bicentennial Conservatory and the National Wine Centre.
Well designed with fabulous structures and an easy to follow lay out, this area is fun yet educational with plenty to see and do.
Pathways and viewing platforms go all the way through the wetlands and visitors can make their way across the water using the path of stepping stones. There are different levels to wander through and the view from the lookout deck over the wetlands is beautiful.
This garden will show visitors new plants and a function of plants which they may never have considered. The collection holds over 60,000 plants, many of which are Australian natives. Some are rare and endangered plants from South Australia which have been grown from seeds collected by the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre.
Wetlands are such an important part of our landscape here in Australia and the wide range of benefits they provide our environment, economy and society are amazing. The signage throughout this area is excellent and explains the facts in a way children too will understand. In time the plants will grow and the landscape will change as the wetlands show us how essential and useful they are for maintaining a healthy environment.
There is more life in a healthy wetland than in almost any other habitat. Not only will the wetlands provide a sustainable water supply for the gardens, it will be home to an abundant variety of plants, insects, reptiles, birds and fish.
