National Park Discovery Days | 15 April 2015 until 31 May 2015
Have you always wanted to go to get closer to nature but didn’t know where to start?
The Adelaide area has more than 30 national parks, including recreation and conservation parks. From Aldinga Sands in the south to Para Wirra in the north, each park has its own unique mix of plants and animals, great trails and beautiful scenery.
So pack a picnic, come to these FREE national park discovery days and try some of the fun activities on offer to see what you’ve been missing in your backyard.
Sturt Gorge Recreation Park
Wednesday 15 April 2015 | 10am-2pm
Enter from Craigburn Rd, Craigburn Farm and look for the signs.
- mountain bike skills workshops – bikes provided but places are limited – bookings are essential
- ride with a ranger to learn about the park – BYO bike
- mountain biking – trails for every skill level from beginners to advanced – BYO bike
- archaeological site visit – watch archaeologists at work at Magpie Creek
- nature education activities
- geocaching
- sausage sizzle
- dogs welcome on leads
Onkaparinga National Park and Recreation Park
Tuesday 21 April 2015 | 10am-3pm
Meet at the picnic area and car park at Perry’s Bend, on River Rd, Noarlunga Downs.
- kayak tours on the Onkaparinga River with a ranger – places are limited – bookings are essential
- guided walks with the Friends of Onkaparinga Parks volunteers
- wetlands walks
- family-friendly cycling – BYO bike or borrow one on the day
- orienteering with Tjuringa Orienteering Club
- geocaching
- nature education activities
- sausage sizzle
dogs welcome on leads in the recreation park only
Belair National Park
Sunday 3 May 2015 | 9am-4pm
Upper Sturt Rd, Belair – Meet at Gums Oval, inside the park.
- guided walks with Friends of Belair National Park
- orienteering with Onkaparinga Hills Orienteering Club
- guided bike rides and obstacle course with the South Australian Mountain Bike Association
- free tennis and basketball court hire
- nature education activities
- guided tours of Old Government House
- dogs welcome on leads
Para Wirra Recreation Park
Sunday 24 May 2015 | 10am-3pm
Humbug Scrub Rd, One Tree Hill
Free overnight camping in the park on Saturday, 23 May – sites are limited – bookings are essential on 8523 7700.
Activities for campers, including a night walk with a ranger and a morning bird walk.
Sunday activities include:
- dress-up parades and storytelling inside a giant echidna with the Nylon Zoo
- guided nature walks
- guided history walks
- self-guided bike rides on the park’s sealed roads – BYO bikes
- geocaching
- nature education and natural play activities
- sausage sizzle
- dogs welcome on leads
Cobbler Creek Recreation Park 25th Birthday Celebration
