The Adelaide Hills has long been known for its beautiful landscapes, cellar doors and family fun, but did you know it’s also home to the giant donut?
by Katrina Gogel
The Lobethal Bakery has become famous in Adelaide for this gigantic treat. They’ve been producing giant chocolate sprinkle donuts for nearly twelve months now, and due to its popularity has since added not one but TWO MORE giant donuts to their range. As well as the choc sprinkle, you can also purchase a giant jam and cream donut topped with icing sugar (yum!) and a giant glazed donut.
These giants measure in at approximately 20 centimetres wide and are a whopping FOUR times the size of a normal donut. As you can see, it’s bigger than my six-year-old son’s head!
Here’s their new giant jam and cream donut on the Lobethal Bakery Facebook page:

Not only are they huge, these donuts are delicious too. We opted for the original choc sprinkle, which my boys couldn’t wait to get their hands on. I only just had enough time for a few quick photos before they dug in.
These donuts are so big that they’ll easily feed the family for dessert, or would make for a fun (and cost-effective) birthday cake. And if you don’t feel like sharing and are up for a challenge? You could try to eat the whole thing by yourself!
So, does the giant donut live up to the hype?
We certainly think so. It’s huge, it’s delicious, and it’s a very well-priced family treat at only $6.50 each.
Not a donut fan?
Never fear! The Lobethal Bakery also offers an extensive range of tasty baked goods, fresh artisan breads, cakes, sandwiches, coffee, breakfasts and even gelati. There’s something for everyone here!
Things to consider
- Giant donut prices start from $6.50.
- Lobethal Bakery has five locations across the Adelaide Hills: Lobethal, Woodside, Balhannah, Mount Barker and Stirling.
- Not all stores stock the whole giant donut range. If you are after a particular type you may want to phone ahead to see if it’s available in store.
- Lobethal Bakery stores do not open on a Sunday (see their website for opening times)
- There’s word that there will soon be more flavours added to their giant donut range. Keep an eye on their facebook page for announcements.
